Contains the following type of materials: correspondence. Contains information pertaining to the following wars: World War I (WWI), World War II (WWII), Korean War, Vietnam War. Contains information pertaining to the following military units: 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions; 25th Infantry Division; I (1st) and II (2nd) Field Forces; 1st, 4th and 25th Infantry Divisions; 1st Cavalry Division. General description of the collection: The S.L.A. Marshall papers include his interview notes with military officers and privates; his sketches of battlefields; and reports, tables of organization, strength, casualties, intelligence estimates, maps, etc. Also includes clippings for WWI and WWII with interviews and correspondence regarding the operations of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions in Normandy and Ardennes. Information on James H. Collins, J. Lawton Collins, Gerald J. Higgins, and Maxwell Taylor is also found. Korean War source materials and maps focus on the advance of the 25th Division toward the Yalu, the retreat of the 2nd Division from North Korea, and the operations of the 1st Marine Division around the Chosin Reservoir in 1950; and material on 7th Division at Pork Chop Hill in 1953 with a memoir from George B. Barth on his command of the 24th Division Artillery (1950) and the 25th Division Artillery (1950-1951). Papers on the Vietnam War focus on the events in the I (1st), II (2nd), and III (3rd) Corps Zones in 1966 and 1969. Operations covered include Attleboro, Geronimo, Nathan Hall, and Thayer-Irving; and the defense of Quang Tri city in 1968. The following officers were interviewed: Creighton Abrams; Olinto Barsanti; Julian Ewell; Harry Kinnard; Bruce Palmer, Jr.; Willard Pearson; William Rosson; Richard Stilwell; Charles P. Stone; John J. Tolson; Keith War; William Westmoreland; and Frederick Weyand. Material is also found on the Arab-Israeli Wars of 1956 and 1967 with interviews of Israeli including: Haim Bar Lev, Moshe Dayan, and David Eleazar; Israeli battle maps; and General Marshall's own sketches. Most items concern fighting in the Sinai and Gaza Strip.

Historical note: The First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Vietnam in 1965. It was the third United States Army unit to arrive. In December of 1967, the remainder of the division was deployed to Bien Hoa, South Vietnam in Operation Eagle Thrust. The 101st was the only army division ever airlifted directly into combat.
